In partnership with Region 2 of the US Forest Service, MobilizeGreen is seeking a Recreation Resource Assistant Intern for the White River National Forest. The Aspen-Sopris Ranger District is a fun and fast-paced place to work in a beautiful and high-profile setting. Opportunities to explore and enjoy the area are endless, with five major ski areas, five Wilderness areas, numerous campgrounds, and hundreds of miles of trail.

The intern will work on the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District of the Forest assisting with implementation of Phase 2 of the Forest's Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness overnight permit plan. The District implemented Phase 1 in summer 2018 at the Conundrum Hot Springs with great success. The District is seeking a graduate student who is an outside-the-box thinker who can help implement the next phase of the plan. The RA may also be asked to assist with other recreation management activities across the forest.


  • Full-time (40 hours per week) for 26 weeks, starting November 2018.
  • Hours will include weekends and occasional evenings.


  • $500/wk living stipend
  • Bunkhouse-style housing provided by Forest Service
  • 2-year non-competitive hiring certificate (upon successful completion of at least 960 hours)

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Learn all aspects of visitor behavior associated with the permit area.
  • Maintain public trust to utilize the minimum tool necessary to meet desired conditions.
  • Develop a phase 2 project plan in coordination with the district Wilderness and Trails Manager and the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Review major planning steps with the forest Recreation Planner.
  • Analyze field data from the 2018 field season and integrate findings into permit design.
  • Determine staff needs for the 2019 field season specific to the project, including determine additional field data collection needs.
  • Determine the social and ecological carrying capacity for groups at one time within the permit area.
  • Reach out to internal and external protected area managers to learn best practices of permit implementation.
  • Define the parameters/business rules of the permit system and work with to outline a web-based permit reservation system.
  • Write, refine, and implement wilderness-wide monitoring plan.
  • Design project area maps using ArcMap.
  • Keep district partners informed of projected permit implementation timeline where necessary.
  • Learn FLREA and facilitate the process for fee implementation associated with the permit system.
  • Involve Forest staff including specialists, program managers, and line officers as necessary in aspects of permit planning
  • Maintain regular communication with the Wilderness and Trails Manager throughout the design process.
  • Professionally represent the Forest Service/district when conducting outreach to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and present project updates for the district as directed.
  • Adapt to deviations from the project plan as needed with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently, seeking help when needed through the appropriate avenue.


  • Graduate Degree in a natural resources field

  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.

Work Environment:

The work environment presents normal, every-day risks or discomforts typical of offices, meeting rooms, field, and travel situations. RA will be exposed to a high alpine climate.

Physical Demands:

The work requires that the RA be flexible and adapt to a variety of work settings, both indoors and outdoors. There will be physical exertion such as walking and hiking on uneven and even terrain. There will be lifting and moving boxes and equipment up to 25 pounds. At special events, the RA may be standing for long periods.
