In partnership with the USDA Forest Service conservation education and outreach program, MobilizeGreen seeks an Urban Connections (UC) Resource Assistant intern who is interested in learning more about Forest Service careers while contributing to the mission of "Caring for the Land and Serving People." Beginning in late May, the intern will work full time for 6 months to engage urban residents in conservation education programs about forests and nature with the support of the Minnesota UC coordinator. The Resource Assistant position will include significant time in the field and on the road to other Midwest and East Coast states. If you enjoy connecting with people and the outdoors, this is the job for you! Recent college graduates, with an associate's or bachelor's degree, preferred.   • Full-time (40 hours per week) for 6 months
  • Hours will include weekends and occasional evenings.


  • $575/week living allowance

  • 2-year non-competitive hiring certificate for permanent jobs with the Forest Service (must complete at least 960 hours to be eligible)
  • Hands on training and experience


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Promote urban residents' awareness and understanding of the natural resources and environmental issues in their communities and natural resources related careers through the development and presentation of environmental education and outreach materials. Examples include assisting Wilderness Inquiry with leading local canoe trips with youth, assisting the National Park Service with youth programming about the value of forests to clean water and wildlife, working the Conservation Corps high school students organizing service projects and assisting with meeting natural resource professionals so they can learn about new career options.
  • Encourage urban residents to participate in outdoor recreation and conservation of natural resources through events such as Get Outdoors Day.
  • Spend one week training with Wilderness Inquiry to learn outdoor leadership skills.
  • Through Wilderness Inquiry learn how to steer a Voyageur canoe, and drive a 15 passenger van with a trailer. There will also be opportunities to be certified in wilderness first aid and water safety.
  • Through Mobilize Green and the USDA Forest Service receive training in defensive driving, federal resume building, and networking with other Resource Assistants.
  • Training funds are available to visit a National Forest to learn more about career opportunities.
  • Travel as a USDA Forest Service representative with Wilderness Inquiry's urban education program, Canoemobile. Intern will travel for 6-10 weeks, facilitating field trips for underserved student groups, families, and adults.
  • Assist the Minnesota Urban Connections coordinator with additional projects and events. May include development and presentation of environmental education and outreach materials.
