In partnership with the US Forest Service Region 5, MobilizeGreen is seeking a Recreation and Special Uses Intern to work on the Mountaintop Ranger District of the San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. This is a full-time, six-month service commitment based in Fawnskin, CA. The intern will support various aspects of the Forest Service Region 5, and must be able to understand and work with various natural resource policies and procedures. Diverse candidates strongly encouraged to apply.

Term

  • Full-time (40 hrs/week) for 6 months, starting January 2018

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Partnership/ Public Interaction
    • Candidate must have excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills as they will be required to work in the field with permittees.
  • Volunteer Programs
    • This position may require coordination with volunteer organizations.
    • Candidate will work with volunteers and assist with front desk duties at visitor centers.
  • Forest Outreach and Information Sharing
    • Develop materials to present to supervisor and mentors on the current status and need for action regarding special uses and recreation management.
  • Special Uses and Recreation Assignments
    • Perform field analysis on various work as needed
    • Special uses filing procedures
    • Assist with initiating, administering and monitoring recreation event permits
    • Organize camp permit inspections and surveying areas with GPS
    • Initiate filming permits and monitoring filed activities
    • Assist with visitor services
    • Recreation cabin inspections, data collection and proposal processing
    • Winter sports inspections

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Required
    • Ability to communicate with forest staff, contractors and the public by phone, email, Skype or in person.
    • The candidate will have a basic understanding of wildlife, vegetation, soils, botany, recreation and other natural resource management disciplines.
    • The candidate should have a strong charisma, good social skills and enjoy working in team environments. It is also important for the candidate to have the desire and ability to work with diverse and demanding customers.
    • Excellent collaboration skills
    • Ability to develop strategies based on multiple inputs
    • Ability to prioritize work
    • Basic understanding of project management and team management
    • Excellent organizational skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Desirable
    • Preferred Bachelor's degree with some natural resource management degree
    • Additional professional or volunteer experience in areas relating to the position
    • Experience in analysis and management of recreational sites
    • Familiarity with land management agencies

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to perform office work
  • Must be able to spend time in the field
  • Must work Full time 40 hours per week.

Other Requirements

  • Successfully complete the background check
  • U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident
  • Valid driver license with a good driving record
