In partnership with the US Forest Service, MobilizeGreen is seeking an Engineering Assistant to work at the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in South Lake Tahoe, CA. The Engineering Assistant will work with the Forest Engineering staff to conduct facilities maintenance, design, and construction around the National Forest lands of the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Engineering Assistant will work with the FS staff and members of the Generation Green of Lake Tahoe program and represent the US Forest Service, often engaging in public contacts when performing their field work. Diverse candidates strongly encouraged to apply.  

Term: Full-time (40 hrs/week) for 12 weeks, starting June 10, 2019.


  • $560/week living stipend

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Managing current engineering projects approved by engineering leadership
  • Projects include, and are not limited to: creating engineering design files for future projects; installing boardwalks, water bars, BMP's, and proper water drainage features on various USFS sites; and working on any engineering projects as assigned
  • Lead YCC members on project implementation of boardwalk at Taylor Creek Visitor Center, the only visitor center on the LTBMU
  • Assisting Forest Engineers on future project planning and project creation

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Required: clean driving record and valid state-issued driver's license. Applicant should be comfortable driving in heavy traffic, on narrow mountain roads on- and off-road.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering projects and practices;
  • Knowledge of recreation site facility maintenance;
  • Basic knowledge of safety & health standards and accepted safety practices to prevent disease, injury or loss of life.;
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully on physically demanding and/or outdoor project work;
  • Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments and to work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and otherwise maintain good physical condition.
  • Applicants must be interested in U.S. Forest Service work. 

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

The job is physically arduous with work being done outdoors almost every day.  Job responsibilities include maintenance & cleanup of recreation sites, inspecting recreation sites, monitoring special use permit areas for compliance with the permit, trail work, noxious weed removal, wilderness restoration, fuels reduction work, talking to the public providing information about Forest rules and regulations, and educating the public with information about resources.
