In partnership with the US Forest Service, MobilizeGreen is seeking 2 Recreation Interns to work on the Plumas National Forest for the summer of 2019. Each summer, the Beckwourth Ranger District draws many outdoor enthusiasts. The beauty of the District's lakes, granite peaks, and verdant forest lands bring in visitors from across the land and around the globe. The various opportunities for recreational experiences attract a diverse group of visitor to the Forest.  

The primary duty of the Recreation Intern is to partake in a variety of functions associated with trail, campground, sign, and day-use site maintenance.  The intern will be a part of a team that will implement various construction projects throughout the summer, such as installing kiosks, picnic tables, and signs. There will be lots of opportunities for hands-on training, and lots of exposure to working cross-functionally with other departments. Diverse candidates strongly encouraged to apply. 

Term: Full-time (40 hrs/week) for 16 weeks, starting June 3, 2019.


  • $500/week living stipend
  • Housing provided in FS barracks on the district
  • Hands-on learning and experience

Training and Support in the following:

  • 1stAid/CPR training
  • Radio and SPOT device training
  • Trail maintenance training
  • Fire Training
  • Public contact 
  • Route finding, map reading. 
  • Safe work practices

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and maintain recreation sites, including disassembling poorly located or excessive fire rings, removing trash, burying human waste, and un-assembling primitive structures visitors made from logs or stone.
  • Staffing trailheads to educate public on Leave No Trace ethics and policies.
  • Visitor contact in recreation sites to educate public on Leave No Trace ethics and policies, provide information as needed to the public on trail conditions, etc. 
  • Conduct recreation event monitoring.
  • Prepare recreation reports.
  • Work with volunteers, animal packers, pack animals and other staffs to conduct trail maintenance and remove downed trees. 
  • Report trail conditions to supervisor. 

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Preferred skills: Trail maintenance, recreation background, Off-Highway Vehicle experience   
  • Education or experience in Recreation, Natural Resource Management, or Conservation Education (no degree required)

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

This is a semi-physical position which requires occasional hiking up to 5 miles a day.
